ONLINE EXHIBIT
ANCIENT MEXICAN ART
This upcoming online exhibition will feature pieces selected form the Barrick Museum's collection to illustrate the cultural and historical continuity of Mexican art. The pieces all date to before the Spanish Conquest of the 1500's. The materials, techniques, and designs used in ancient Mexico continue to enrich the folk art of today.
Much is known of the native people of Mexico at the time of the Conquest. Less is known of the people who lived in Mexico thousands of years before.
Ceramic Vessels
Ceramic pottery bowls and jars provided artists with opportunities for creativity. Surfaces were often burnished, glazed, or elaborately painted.
Animal Imagery
Artists in Ancient Mexico and other parts of Mesoamerica used images of animals in their art. The ceramics shown here include vessels that represent the bodies of animals, including the dog, parrot, and tapir.
Daily Life
Scenes of daily life were recorded in ancient Mexico by artists. The ceramics to be shown here demonstrate different daily scenes, from weaving to gatherings. All of the ceramics are from West Mexico.
Sculptural Figures
Ceramic or stone sculptural figures were often used as vessels.
