Red Racer (Coachwhip)
This harmless, reddish brown snake is one of just three in southern Nevada that is active only in daytime. Reaching lengths of about four feet, the racer is known for its speed, which it uses to help catch its food – mostly lizards and other small animals. Red racers are excellent climbers and frequently enter bushes or small trees to seek food or avoid capture. Though non-venomous, this snake may bite savagely if picked up. The red racer is probably the most commonly seen snake in the desert around Las Vegas.
