Panamint Rattlesnake
This smaller variety of speckled rattlesnake prefers higher elevation mountain slopes and cooler, sagebrush desert to the hot, creosote desert habitats in which the closely related southwestern speckled lives. Reaching lengths of just two to three feet, the Panamint can quickly be identified by the dark bands across its generally gray or brownish back and its typically dark, charcoal-colored head. This is considered the most mild-mannered of all speckled rattlesnakes, and bites from this snake are rare.
