Great Basin Collared Lizard
With its big head and the two black collars around its neck, the collared is hard to mistake for any other. Though slightly smaller than the closely related leopard lizard, the collared, too, is designed for speed. Using its tail for balance, it runs on just its hind legs when pursuing food or avoiding predators. A collared will eat almost anything it can catch and swallow, including insects, spiders, scorpions, smaller lizards and baby rodents. Collareds usually live in rocky areas and often jump from rock to rock when hunting. The yellowish light brown or tan color and the many small spots on the back help the collared blend with its surroundings. Though harmless, collareds are quick to bite if picked up, and a bite from this lizard can be very painful.
