The Marjorie Barrick Museum Ornithology Department maintains curated collections of study skins, eggs, and frozen tissues. Division research projects include: molt studies of passerine (song) birds, the molecular systematic and intercontinental biogeography of certain passerine genera, phylogeography of passerine species, especially those species occurring in the sky-islands of the Great Basin, radiation effects on birds at the Nevada Test Site and documenting distributions of antifauna in both southern Nevada and Honduras.
COLLECTION
The study skin collection of over 10,000 specimens is surprisingly diverse for a small museum with over 1,300 species represented. In addition to specimens from Nevada and throughout the United States, this diversity is exemplified by collections from South Africa (750 specimens), Canada (500), Mexico (450), Guatemala(300), Nicaragua (500), Argentina (450), and the Antarctic (300). The Museum currently has the fourth largest collection of skins from Honduras; each specimen has an associated tissue, giving the Marjorie Barrick Museum the only collection of tissues of Honduran birds in the world. We are actively building the collections, having several expeditions to Honduras and one to South Africa in 1999, and expeditions to Honduras and South Africa in 2000. Several expeditions, both domestic and foreign, are planned over the next few years.
The egg collection consists of 2,000 sets, most with nests. Strengths in this collection include large numbers of egg sets from Antarctic and the high Arctic of Canada.
The tissue collection currently numbers over 4,500 specimens and has been actively growing since 1997. In addition to species collected from the southwestern United States, the collection includes material from Honduras, Nicaragua, South Africa and Argentina.
