Welcome to the home page of the Microbiology Division of the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies, located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The Microbiology Division has extensive expertise in bioaerosol and surface sampling, fungal identification, and detection of environmental microorganisms by traditional and molecular biological methods. The research is conducted in a biosafety level 2 (BSL2) microbiology labratory and two room-sized test chambers. Microbiologists in the division have been conducting research in the field of environmental microbiology since 1988, and have recently been involved in studies to:
- determine the efficacy of microbial surface sampling strategies in indoor environments
- devise sample processing and analysis methods for the molecular detection of environmental fungi in the International Space Station
- develop molecular strategies for the characterization of subsurface bacterial populations that are present at the Nevada Test Site
