Title of Data: Chlorine-36, Bomb Pulse-Study of Chlorine-36/Chlorine and Chlorine-35/Chlorine-37 Isotope Ratios Measured in Leachates of Rock Collected from the Yucca Mountain Exploratory Studies Facility.

Description: Chlorine-36/Chlorine and Chlorine-35/Chlorine-37 isotope ratios were measured in leachates from rock collected from the Exploratory Studies Facility, surface soils located above the north and south ramps of the tunnel, Exploratory Studies Facility Seep and blanks associated with the UNLV Chlorine-36, Bomb-Pulse Study. The measured chlorine-36/chlorine ratios were corrected for chlorine-36 in the leach water and reagents. The measurements were taken by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry at the Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement Laboratory (PRIME).

    Acquisition/Development Method:

  • The leaching and sample preparation methods for Cl-36 were fully documented in scientific notebook, UCCSN-UNLV-065, vol. 1,4. They generally followed Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), procedure LANL-CST-DP-92-R2, LANL-CST-DP-95-R2 and LANL-CST-DP-97-R1 with minor notebook revisions. Analysis was conducted Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) at Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement Laboratory (PRIME).

004JC.006 Portions of the measured Chlorine-36/Chlorine ratios were used to develop data submittal 004JC.007. The measured ratios were background corrected for 36Cl determined in processed blanks ran on 3/31/06 by the Accelerator Mass Spectrometer. Chloride in the reagent blank and chloride added as a carrier were subtracted from the total chloride determined in the final leachate (see source data submittal 004JC.008 directly below). The resultant value was used as the denominator in the 36Cl/Cl corrected ratio calculation. The numerator was determined by multiplying the measured ratio by the total chloride (mg) in the final leachate, and subtracting the amount of 36Cl stemming from reagents/process, which was in turn calculated by multiplying the measured ratio for the process blank by the amount of chloride (mg) added from the blank. If more than one process blank was for a leaching run, mean blank results were employed in the calculation. Propagation of the 36Cl/Cl uncertainty followed standard error propagation techniques and included a 2% factor for a sample preparation. The specific calculations were added as an electronic attachment to notebooks, UCCSN- UNLV-065, vol. 1,4.
004JC.008 Portions of chloride concentrations were used to develop data submittal 004JC.007. The measured ratios were background corrected for chloride in the leach water ran on 3/31/06 by the Accelerator Mass Spectrometer and a carrier was added. Chloride in the reagent blank and chloride added as a carrier were subtracted from the total chloride determined in the final leachate. The resultant value was used as the denominator in the 36Cl/Cl corrected ratio calculation as described for source data submittal 004JC.006.
