The Harry Reid Center administers a Cooperative Agreement between the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) (formerly the University and Community College System of Nevada) and the United States Department of Energy's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management. The purpose of the agreement is to conduct independent unbiased scientific and engineering studies related to the proposed Yucca Mountain high-level nuclear waste repository site. Tasks conducted under the Cooperative Agreement are planned and proposed by researchers within the System of Higher Education, and are approved and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Work intended to address waste isolation or safety issues are conducted in accordance with the NSHE Quality Assurance Program which is also administered by the Harry Reid Center.
