HRC >> Division of Cultural Resources >> About Us

Our Mission Statement

The principal mission of the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (HRC), is to support multi-disciplinary research teams and provide expertise in solving complex resource problems. The Division of Cultural Resources at HRC has been active in cultural resource management for nearly 40 years in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and the Mojave Desert regions of Southern California. Cultural resource projects are conducted by HRC in support of client compliance with historic preservation law. These efforts are approached with the goal of protecting significant sites and compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act while completing projects on time and within budget. We also provide expertise with statutes such as the Archaeological Resource Protection Act (ARPA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). As a result of our work, we have developed positive long term relationships with Federal and State agencies, State Historic Preservation Offices and Native American Tribes and a number of private and engineering clients.

Project Team

The Division of Cultural Resources is located on the beautiful University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus, where in addition to the facilities offered by the Division of Cultural Resources, the University supplies wide range support services to the HRC. Although cultural resource management is the primary research objective of the Division of Cultural Resources at HRC, we also serve the State of Nevada as the Keepers of the Southern Nevada Archaeological Archive and are a designated state repository for cultural collections. HRC is equipped with state-of-the-art computer technology, which includes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) capabilities. A large portion of the cultural resource laboratory analysis is conducted in-house in one of our many laboratories. We maintain a full-time staff of five professional historic and prehistoric archaeologists which specialize in the archaeology of Nevada and the greater American Southwest. Please view a list of the many services we provide.
