Old
Business:
1.
Open Issues: Becky
has spoken to Carl Reynolds (Facilities) who said he can definitely
(probably)* find the dollars for the
installation of emergency lights in all of the laboratories at HRC. The lights cost $150-$250 each depending on
whether they are attached to an exit light or not and so would total
approximately $4000 for the building.
2. CPR training: A class offered by Extended Education ($25) was advertised via e-mail throughout HRC. It is not known how many people attended. Becky said that a CPR class will almost surely be associated with the automatic external defibrillator (AED) training. The AEDs are here on campus and EH&S is currently deciding how to administer and control them. HRC will get one. HRC will receive AED and probably CPR training before the summer.
Routine mandatory training: The coming quarterly training schedule has been received and posted on the safety committee website at http://hrcweb.nevada.edu/Safety/. It was discussed that the communications at HRC concerning training has improved. Staff members coordinating training classes for their own group have been distributing the information throughout HRC so that others can participate.
Personal Protective Equipment Training: Questions about personal protective equipment (PPE) training prompted a discussion of requirements. Anyone who is required to wear PPE must receive PPE training.
Safety Glasses and Contacts: The use of safety glasses is to be directed by individual laboratory managers. Contact lenses can be worn in UNLV laboratories. Caution should be taken however for contact wearers who plan to work with airborne hazards such as solvents and acid vapors. Safety glasses must have side shields. Regular prescription glasses although possibly shatterproof, do not meet OSHA requirements. To wear prescription glasses in the laboratory, either obtain prescription safety glasses, or wear safety glasses (or goggles) that are designed to go over prescription glasses.
Radiation Safety training: Radiation safety training is communicated to the individual “users”. A quarterly schedule is not prepared and distributed.

New Business:
1. Laboratory Access: Gary Cerefice announced that MSM-164/168 now contains a radioactive source and is locked. Anyone needing access that has not had radiation safety training must contact Gary. The lab will be certified for hydrofluoric acid use in the near future.
Asbestos abatement of floor tiles in MSM-172 will begin in the next few months. During that time, there will be little or no access.
2.
West Nile Virus:
Garth Spellman mentioned that in the next few months, West Nile Virus
will become more prominent in the news.
There is no need to overreact to the warnings. Common sense and proper hygiene will prevent the spread of the
disease and the HRC Bird Range is not considered to be a hazard.
3. HRC Electric Cart Weekend Storage: The golf carts have recently posed an egress problem for Microbiology personnel working in MSM-146 on Fridays and weekends. When storing the carts, they were being placed in front of the doors to the lab. A plan has been worked out where one cart can be parked next to the recycle area and the other against the wall so that doors are not blocked.
4. HRC Electric Cart Usage Policy: Since UNLV’s recently-developed electric cart policy has not been distributed yet, the HRC Safety Committee developed an interim policy for student use of golf carts. Each student’s supervisor is responsible to verify that student drivers are licensed to drive and that they specifically know how to control the golf cart pedals and forward/reverse mechanisms. In the case of a non-supervisor directing a student to use an HRC cart, that person assumes the responsibility for assuring that the student can control the cart.
5. Scheduling of Next Meeting: The next meeting will be no later than the end of May 2003.
