Old Business:

1.                    Training:  Tom Kerr of EH&S has communicated to us that HRC personnel are not to attend any training that is on the EH&S training schedule.  The scheduled training is for Facilities Management personnel only.  We must request training through him with the requirement that he won’t set up a class for fewer than 5 people.  If you have people needing training in chemical hygiene, electric cart use, etc., e-mail Jeanette Daniels.   When she has 5 people needing a class, she will coordinate the class date, time, and location with Tom.

New Business:

1.                                            Laboratory Access:  Gary Cerefice announced that MSM-172&173 will have construction initiated in  January or February.  The Radiation Detection Laboratory, MSM 164 & 168, will be locked and unavailable to untrained personnel in the near future.

The TEM is almost fully operational.  If you are in the TEM laboratory when the alarm goes off, there is a big red shutoff switch by the door.  Press that to turn off the systems.

2.                                            Fire inspection:  The report shows that there are problems as follows.  If any of these areas or belongings are yours, please take the appropriate action to solve the violation listed by February, when the building is slated for re-inspection.  Please note that EH&S has allowed the use of sliding props, such as sandbags, for doors because these do not become stuck during an emergency.

a.        Rooms 271&2 exits obstructed by boxes on 2nd floor stairway landing

b.       Rated fire doors are wedged propped open throughout the building

c.        Storage on shelves must maintain eighteen inches of clearance from sprinkler heads in Room 172A

d.       No combustible storage under the stairway in Room 176 and the East Stairwell on floor 1 is allowed

e.        Remove the combustible boxes against the west exterior of the building by the High Voltage Cage

The following violations must be solved by Facilities.  If you are responsible for any of these areas, please call HELP and request action.

a.     Emergency light is out in the Men’s restroom adjacent to Room 170E

b.     Standpipe (tag 3/01) located in the West Stairwell is to be serviced annually

c.     Install missing ceiling tile in Room 122A

3.                                            Building Alarm:  The alarm panel for HRC that sends signals to emergency vehicles has rooms misidentified.  Also a fire alarm causes the Marlok devices to lock the two alarmed external doors.  Current plans include removing the Marlok devices entirely.   Both of these issues will be solved when and if the alarm panel can be reprogrammed or replaced.   Facilities is aware of the issue and is working to solve it but there is currently  no time estimate for completion.

4.                                            Patricia Cruz observed lost fire engine/paramedic vehicles in the north parking lot.  She suggested that since UNLV Public Safety dispatch coordinates emergency calls that the dispatcher arrange for a police escort for the emergency vehicles.   This would help emergency crews navigate the ever-changing effects of construction on the campus map.  Aurali volunteered to communicate this to Public Safety (John Taylor, the UNLV Emergency Planner)*.

5.                                            Susan Murphy brought some personal safety tips to put onto the HRC safety website.  The committee approved this.

6.                                            Aurali announced that an independent safety contractor inspected the UNLV campus for compliance to safety regulations.  The report of this inspection will come out in a few months with findings and recommendations.  She wanted us to know that the only laboratory area on campus to receive kudos from the contractor was HRC’s Microbiology Division laboratories.  Among other things the use of PPE, proper signage, and a certified bio-safety cabinet were commended.

7.                                            There is a new air filter exchange procedure.  If you need to establish an air filter schedule, contact Jeanette.

8.                                            Scheduling of Next Meeting:  The next meeting will be no later than the end of March 2003 unless need sooner.

Meeting termination:

The meeting was ended before 10 am!
