REMINDER: As we begin a new semester, the University Police would like to remind students and staff that the most common crimes that occur on our campus involve the theft of unsecured property from unlocked offices, classrooms, and dorm rooms. Wallets, purses, computers, supplies and other materials are often stolen from rooms that are left unlocked or unattended for even a few minutes. Please remember to secure property and rooms for which you are responsible. If you see an unfamiliar person in your area, politely inquire if you can help that person find a room number or staff member, or contact University Police at x53668.
Old
Business:
1. Open Issues: A workman was observed altering existing light fixtures in the building. The committee is wondering if these are the “safety lights” that we have been waiting on. The lights stay on when the light switch is turned off, but similar lights on the 1st floor go out when there is a power outage. Safety lights are supposed to stay on during a power outage. Becky said she will check on this.
2. Automatic External Defibrillator (AED): HRC has purchased an AED and it is located in Klaus Stetzenbach’s office. We are to call Klaus at 53742 if the AED is needed or go to his office (MSM-175) and retrieve it. There are a number of personnel in the building who are known to have been trained to use an AED. These people are:
Klaus Stetzenbach 53742
Kaz Lindley 51441
Amy Smiecinski 51420
Irene Farnham 54123
Jeanette Daniels 54450
Jim Cizdziel 54190
Scott Page 52785
Amanda Brandt 51458
Trina Steljes 51445
Funding is not being provided by the HRC to train users of the AED. If you can pay for the training with your account funds or are willing to spend personal funds, we encourage you to get CPR/AED training. Let your safety committee representative know that you have received this training so that we can add you to the list.
3. Routine training: The July/August/September quarterly training schedule is posted on the safety committee website at http://hrcweb.nevada.edu/Safety/. Training will be added to the schedule as a result of this meeting: Campus Cart Safety (not mandatory) on 9/3, 4, 9, 10, 11 from 9-10am in classroom, CSB-164; Respirator training (mandatory) on 9/9, 10, & 11 from 10-11am in the same room. Call 54226 to sign up for classes.
Jeanette and her staff are preparing practical training classes for HRC Nuclear Science & Technology and Chemistry personnel. This training will cover where fire extinguishers, showers, eye washes, first-aid kits, are and other HRC-specific information
4. Vehicle Use: Previously at meetings, the committee addressed the damage to and by electric carts caused by students. At this meeting, the possibility that staff could have cart accidents was also discussed. Care in driving carts applies to all personnel. Please assure that any of your personnel who drive carts are capable of operating the cart components. The requirement that cart-drivers carry their NV driver’s license will not be enforced, but must be on file in the front office in order to drive a full-sized vehicle.
In the future, EH&S will offer “train-the-trainer” classes for campus carts so that personnel in each department can train cart users.
New Business:
1.
New Chairman & member: Jeanette Daniels was appointed as the new committee
chair with no objections from the current members present at the meeting. Amy will continue to take the minutes and her
student Aishia
Terry McGeachy of the Museum will join the committee at the next meeting, replacing Kate Hahn.
2. Laboratory Access: Gary Cerefice announced that MSM-172&173 will have construction initiated within the next 3 months, some sooner than others.
Note: Do not unlock radiation laboratory doors for EH&S students or other personnel unless they have had full radiation safety training.
Because of the limited access to the radiation laboratory, Jeanette has coordinated with the head of custodial services that (effective immediately) custodians are not to enter HRC laboratories. Jeanette will install signs, as needed, on lab doors throughout the building to prevent custodian entry. Although most of the committee members were under the impression that custodians would not service the labs, and some labs already limit custodian access, it was agreed that for safety reasons all labs should have restricted access to custodians. Therefore, lab personnel are to place trash outside of the lab, nightly. Lab managers may request custodial service through Jeanette, at which time, personnel must clear the lab of hazards.
3. HRC Construction: An apparent miscommunication prevented the contractors working in MSM-145 from cutting a hole in the roof at a precise time to minimize weather impact on the inside of the room. Rain came in to the building and pooled under the Microbiology exposure chamber in the foam beneath the floor. Microbiology is attempting to contract a fungal remediation company to remove the water.
Asbestos remediation is behind schedule and items moved for this work will not be returned to the lab areas until remediation is complete. Labs MSM-172 & 173 floors are being patched and the two Chemistry hallways are being abated.
4. Construction Note: Do not talk to the contractors about the work they are doing and do not enter the fencing that they are working in.
5. Emergency Response Plan: The committee is considering preparing an emergency response plan to handle fires, and other emergencies. Becky provided us with a copy of the library’s plan as a template. No definite plans were made to initiate this yet for HRC.
6. Accident Procedure: Amy is working on a very simple procedure describing the steps to take if HRC personnel are hurt on the job. The procedure will be approved by the author, director, and EH&S.
7. Scheduling of Next Meeting: The next meeting will be no later than the end of November 2003 unless requested to be sooner.
