1. Training: Tom Kerr, training coordinator of EH&S will not give out training records to anyone but employee supervisors. If you need to find out when or if you had a particular training class, call Becky Delacruz for the information or ask your supervisor to call Tom. Becky can also schedule HRC employees to training classes. UNR personnel are welcome to attend UNLV training but it is not required. Cart training is required for anyone who drives an electric cart. Respirator training is coming in September. 24-hour OSHA training is coming in the future. Call Becky for the upcoming PPE training schedule that will be in CSB-164.
2. Laboratory Access: GaryCerefice announced that MSM-172a&173 construction has started and the labs are closed to personnel. Dressed out personnel will be on the roof soon changing out rad lab HEPA filters. The west door to the first floor laboratory complex north hall must not be propped open.
3.
Fire Safety & HAZMAT Meeting: As a result of a recent CCFD HAZMAT indoctrination
here at HRC, CCFD requested and chaired a meeting with HRC, EH&S, and
Nevada State Fire Marshals on April 13, at
q UNLV needs to submit Clark County HAZMAT permits
q HRC has storage within 18 inches of fire sprinklers
q Doors are being propped open
EH&S committed to working with CCFD to get permits submitted. HRC stated that the 18” storage issue is a constant battle and representatives in the meeting would assure their areas comply. Door requirements were clarified. NOTHING can be used to prop open fire doors. Doors opening to hallways are defined as fire doors. Subsequent to the meeting it was clarified that doors without returns can remain open without aid; and doors with returns MUST NOT have the returns removed.
Jeanette will meet in the near future with CCFD as followup to the meeting, and bring back contact information and outstanding issues to Ed Gannon.
4. Incidents: –
Lessons learned:
q In an emergency, do not assume that 911 has been called.
q Call 911 and pull the fire alarm for future non-medical emergencies
q Safety committee members will survey each floor to assure evacuation is complete when fire alarm goes off
q Public Safety does not have keys to HRC internal lab doors; Jeanette will distribute a list to Public Safety of key sources for each lab, probably each director and a backup
q Keys are being obtained to the mechanical rooms
q NFPA labels will be posted by EH&S personnel outside each lab door
q Chemical inventories will be posted outside each lab door
5.
Microbiology is not receiving non-hood airfilter
exchanges. Jeanette will look into this.
6.
Automatic External Defibrillator: Jimmy Maffessanti of EH&S mentioned that
we need to be cognizant that the battery packs and pads on our AED may
expire. He also reminded us that we must
have a doctor overseeing the AED. Our
response was that as soon as UNLV gets a doctor and AED policy/program implemented,
HRC will be glad to comply. Until that
time, we have an AED with qualified personnel available to use it. Shelley Williams also clarified that the
surgical resident working in her lab is available to oversee the HRC AED.
